Google Analytics Quick Tips for Website Owners
Google Analytics can definitely feel like a maze of graphs and technical jargon. That’s why I created a very simple, step-by-step guide to find the important stuff.
If you’re a small business owner, the key to Google Analytics is to ignore 90% of the noise and focus on the 10% that actually tells you if your marketing is working.
Google Analytics doesn’t have to be a headache. Think of it as a “health check” for your website.
I’m focusing on the three most important questions more website owners ask. My goal is to help you answer these in less than five minutes.
“How many people are visiting, and are they staying?”
Instead of looking at “Hits” or “Raw Traffic,” look at Engaged Sessions. This tells you if people actually stuck around for more than 10 seconds or viewed more than one page.
How to find it:
- Log in and click Reports (the bar chart icon on the left).
- Click Acquisition → Acquisition Overview.
- Look for the Engaged Sessions card.
Why it matters: If your traffic is high but engagement is low, your website might be loading too slowly or the content isn’t what visitors expected.
“Where is my traffic actually coming from?”
Stop guessing if your Facebook posts or local SEO are working.
This report shows exactly who sent you the most visitors.
How to find it:
- Go to Reports → Acquisition.
- Click Traffic Acquisition.
- Look at the table. “Organic Search” is Google/Bing, “Organic Social” is your social media, and “Referral” is other local websites linking to you.
Why it matters: If you’re spending hours on Instagram but getting zero traffic from “Organic Social,” it’s time to adjust your strategy!
“Which pages do people actually like?”
You might assume your your “About” page is page people visit most.
However, your customers might be heading straight for your “Services” or a specific blog post.
How to find it:
- Go to Reports → Engagement.
- Click Pages and Screens.
Why it matters: See which pages have the most Views and the longest Average Engagement Time. These are your “MVP” pages! Make sure they have a clear call to action!
Quick Tip for Busy Owners
Do not check your stats every day!
Set a calendar reminder to into Google Analytics every other week or once a month.
